Winter sports fans urged to seek adequate travel insurance

Fans of winter sports have been urged to seek appropriate travel insurance in order to ensure themselves and their belongings are protected.

Financial research company Defaqto carried out a survey and found that 13 per cent of single trip insurance policies do not offer any cover for winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding.

Meanwhile, when they did, the level of protection varied widely, meaning consumers should check the fine print and compare policies before they buy.

For instance, although 80 per cent of products covered sports equipment to the value of £1,000, only two per cent offered protection for up to £2,000 worth of possessions.

In addition, 20 per cent of policies on offer did not cover travellers in the event of a delay caused by an avalanche.

Defaqto's Mike Powell said: "To ensure they get the right type and level of cover for their trip, people need to focus first and foremost on pinpointing the features they need."

He advised against simply choosing the cheapest policy for this reason.

The 2011 ABTA Consumer Trends survey recently found that one in five holidaymakers are still not taking out travel insurance at all.
