What to look for when choosing static caravan cover

Buying a static caravan can seem appealing for many reasons, but before you get carried away by the idea of enjoying holidays in the countryside, it is important to think about the practical considerations of this investment, including taking out insurance for your second home.

Having static caravan insurance is very important so you can be sure you are financially protected against steep costs should an emergency occur and you have to repair or replace it.

So, when taking out cover, what are the key things to consider?

What is protected?

It might sound obvious but before signing up to a policy, it is worthwhile reading the terms and conditions first so you are fully aware of what you are covered for.

You don't want an accident to occur and then later find out you won't be able to receive compensation from your insurance provider because there was no clause in the agreement.

The first thing to pay attention to is whether there is a limit to how much you would receive if your static caravan is so badly damaged it could not be fixed. It is also worth looking at what type of repair you will be protected against, for instance, if you'd receive remuneration for fire and flood damage.

You might be given a set amount of cash with respect to the age and value of the unit, or you may find policies with a new-for-old option, which allows you to receive a replacement holiday home if it is less than 15 years old.

The latter benefit could be particularly valuable if you have spent a lot of money on your static caravan and want to be given a brand new one if yours is damaged beyond repair.

Protect against injury to others

Your main consideration might be to insure the value of your static caravan, but it is also important to think about how you will be covered if someone is harmed or even killed as a result of an the accident concerning your holiday home.

Check whether your policy has fatal accident benefit and how much money you will receive in the event of a death.

Also take a look at its public liability cover, so if you are sued by someone else for an issue regarding your holiday home, you can be confident you will be protected against legal costs.

Enjoy holidays despite static caravan damage

If your static caravan becomes damaged or ruined while you are staying in it, you might not wish to cut your trip short and return home – particularly if your house is a long way away.

In this case, it is important to look at what terms there are in the policy for reimbursing you for emergency accommodation. Some insurance providers will cover the cost of you and your family having to stay in a hotel up to a certain amount per day and for a specific length of time.

There are many things to consider when taking out insurance for your holiday home, but once you have found one that will fulfil your requirements you can begin to enjoy your holidays in your static caravan as soon as possible!
