Travel insurance 'a holiday essential'

Getting appropriate travel insurance should be a holiday essential for families planning a winter break abroad, moneysupermarket.com has said.

The comparison site warned that failing to take out adequate cover can leave consumers “counting the cost” if something goes wrong.

It added that for families who make more than two trips a year, an annual policy is often the most cost-effective form of protection.

These products can be bought with winter sports insurance for as little as £65 and they provide up £10 million for medical expenses, as well as cancellation and baggage cover. In addition, an annual policy will apply to any breaks taken in the UK.

By comparison, single trip insurance for a two-week break in the US comes in at £42 and has lower levels of protection.

However, the site said one-off cover is often the best choice for families that take only occasional holidays.

One of these policies for a fortnight in France can be obtained for just £11, while the cheapest annual European protection costs £35.

Bob Atkinson, moneysupermarket.com’s travel insurance expert, said: “Price should not be the only motivating factor when you buy. It is vital that you understand the levels of cover on offer and what you are getting for your money.”

According to recent research by Halifax, a quarter of Britons are planning to take a holiday before the end of the year.
