Dental insurance

Dental insurance is a type of health insurance designed to pay for the cost of dental care.

Dental insurance allows people to choose their dentist, and Britons can claim for treatment regardless of whether they use a private or NHS dentist.

Typically people with dental insurance will be required to pay the dentist themselves and then claim back the cost afterwards.

Premiums are based on age, but vary widely between providers. Unlike many forms of health insurance, you generally do not need to go for a check-up before you are allowed to take out a dental insurance policy.

However, many dental insurance policies have a maximum payout for any 12-month period that can be as low as £250, and can cover as little as 75 per cent of claims.

Common exclusions from dental insurance policies include cosmetic work and orthodontic treatment.
