Twin insurance policy launched

Thursday, 27 Mar 2008 09:14
Shoreditch-based insurance broker Marcus Hearn is launching a new policy protecting mothers-to-be against the costs of multiple births.

Mothers have a one in 67 chance of having twins, triplets or even quadruplets and the policy – with premiums starting at £42 – is aimed at those with a history of multiple births in their family.

In the event of a multiple birth the policy pays out between £1,000 and £5,000 to help with the unexpected costs.

Dean Atkin at Marcus Hearn said: "The latest figures show the average cost of raising a child up to the age of five can be as much as £20,000, so taking out an insurance policy to help with the financial blow of having twins or more really does make sense."

The policy can be taken out in up to the 11th week of pregnancy.

Since 1980 there has been a steady rise in the number of multiple births, with older mothers more likely to give birth to twins.
