American Express increases Christmas cover

American Express is increasing its home contents cover for Christmas.

Between December 1st and January 15th, the amount covered by the firm's home insurance plan will increase by ten per cent – to take account of the increase in goods bought over the festive period.

The average shopper spends £378 on presents and the popularity of high price gadgets means some households could find their standard insurance is too low in the event of a claim.

Having insufficient cover could mean if the worst happened total losses would not be covered by an insurance company.

Joanne Field, marketing manager at American Express Insurance Services, said comments: “Unfortunately the Christmas period is popular with burglars who realise there are a lot of new goods in homes waiting to be given or received. Our home insurance customers have increased protection across the Christmas and New Year period to help cover their gifts and provisions in the home.

“We would encourage all householders to review the level of home contents insurance cover is adequate every year, particularly around the Christmas and New Year period”.
