Paying the mortgage, but name not on the loan?

Monday, 14 Jul 2008 14:05
A reader from Coventry is paying his partner's mortgage, but his name is not on the home loan. He is worried about what rights he has.

Tony Davis, myfinances.co.uk mortgage expert from Mortgage Meadow, takes him through the problem.

Gerald from Coventry asks:

My partner and her mother purchased their home on a right to buy, I could not at the time go on the mortgage as I had previously purchased my home on a right to buy.

They have never contributed to any payments whatsoever, so I need to know can if I get my name on the mortgage and what rights do I have should we split up.

Also can I buy the property for a nominal fee and then buy them out?

Tony replies:

You do not have automatic rights to your partner's home and you should seek the advice of a solicitor to discuss what steps you might be able to take, if any, to claim money or share of the property.
