Breaking up and looking for a mortgage?

Monday, 23 Jun 2008 14:37
A reader from Hampshire is looking to obtain a mortgage as a first-time buyer, but she is currently going through a separation.

Tony Davis, myfinances.co.uk mortgage expert from Mortgage Meadow, takes her through the problem.

Zoe from Gosport asks:

I'm just wondering if you can get a mortgage for just one person as a first-time buyer who is also going through a separation.

Tony replies:

Yes, although, it does depend upon the person's current financial position.

If there are on-going financial obligations as part of the separation, these will need to be taken into account and also, care should be taken to ensure that any joint financial commitments are being maintained as this could affect their ability to borrow money if they are not.
