Medical condition hitting travel insurance?

Friday, 09 May 2008 13:11
A reader from Fife is unsure whether to tell his insurer about his high blood pressure when organising travel insurance.

Our team of experts at insurance company LV= offers a helping hand.

John from Inverkeithing asks:

I'm trying to get travel insurance for over 65s and I'm stumped with pre-medical conditions as I only take one tablet for high blood pressure.

Does that mean I've got to declare that when asked if
I've any medical symptoms when I apply or do I just not tell them?

The team at LV= responds:

Some insurers don’t offer cover for people with medical conditions, even a condition that is quite minor.

However you should tell your insurer and ensure you have cover with a company that does offer protection, as otherwise you may find your policy is invalid. This could mean that if something happened whilst you were abroad - related or even unrelated - you wouldn’t be covered.

The good news is that some insurers do offer cover and if you shop around you should be able to get a good deal. Some insurers will want to do a short medical questionnaire on the telephone, however with some insurers, you can simply get a quote and buy the policy online.

An example LV= price for two weeks holiday in Spain, for someone aged 65 with high blood pressure, living in Fife would cost around £22 for the whole trip.
