Ask the insurance expert

Is my conservatory covered by home insurance?

Monday, 14 Jul 2008 14:46
A reader from Haslemere is planning to add a conservatory to his property. However, he is unsure about how it will affect his home insurance.

Ian Durrell, myfinances.co.uk insurance expert from the Only Group, which includes onlyinsurance.com, tackles the issue.

Mick from Haslemere asks:

Hello, would I still be covered by my home insurance if I were to add a conservatory to the property and NOT having a physical barrier, ie external doors, so as to make it if you like just open/straight through from the house?

I have heard that as long as the new conservatory doors are to a certain BS requirement then it doesn't matter.

Thanks

Ian replies:

Yes, provided that the doors are BS3261 standard.

Other single external doors (includes access door) should be fitted with either:
  • a mortice deadlock of at least five levers conforming to BS 3621,
  • a rim deadlock conforming to BS 3621,
  • or a key-operated lock with bolt top and bottom.
  • For solid doors, bolts should be at least 10 inches in length
  • For glass-panelled doors, key-operated mortice rack bolts should be fitted.
  • For Aluminium/UPVC construction then fitted with a multi-point locking system which incorporates a lever or cylinder deadlock, capable of being secured by a key from both sides.
