Car keys covered by home insurance or car insurance?

Monday, 18 Aug 2008 14:45
A reader from Belfast had his car key stolen from his home. He is no unsure whether to make a claim for their replacement on his car insurance policy or his home insurance policy.

Ian Durrell, myfinances.co.uk insurance expert from the Only Group, which includes onlyinsurance.com, tackles the issue.

Micheal from Belfast asks:

My house was burgled and they stole my car keys. I now need to get the locks changed on my car as I have third party only insurance.
I am not covered by car insurance, but could I be covered by my house insurance as they were stolen out of my house?

Ian replies:

This is a hard one and very much depends on your home insurance policy.

However, it is unlikely you can make a claim unless car key replacement is specifically written within the policy.

Some high net worth insurers may have this inclusive option, so it is best to contact your home insurance company.
