Trying to stop a car insurance policy?

Tuesday, 04 Nov 2008 17:36
A reader from Norfolk tried to cancel his car insurance policy and is now in trouble with his insurance company.

Ian Durrell, myfinances.co.uk insurance expert from the Only Group, which includes onlyinsurance.com, tackles the issue.

Richard from Norwich asks:

I have had a good car insurance history for many years until this year where (like many) I have had financial difficulties.

As a result my car insurance policy covering the period from February 1st '08 until February 1st '09 was terminated on 5th June '08.

Therefore, I was in effect covered for insurance from February 1st '08 until 5th June '08 (four months of cover).

Trying to sort out the mess, the insurance company are saying that I am legally obliged to pay the full year premium (in effect paying for 8 months of insurance despite not being insured for that period).

Before I can have another policy (which I would also have to pay for). Is this correct?

Thank you in advance for your response

Ian replies:

First question is were you driving without cover (illegally) whilst not insured? This could be a problem in its own right.

You can take a new policy but any proof of no claims bonus could be difficult to get.
