Insurance for my father's car?

Monday, 21 Jul 2008 11:20
A reader is unsure what cover he has when driving his father's car.

Ian Durrell, myfinances.co.uk insurance expert from the Only Group, which includes onlyinsurance.com, tackles the issue.

Clive from Hemel Hempstead asks:: My father has a car that he does not use and is not insured to drive, although it does currently have road tax/a valid MOT.

Can I drive that car when I visit him on my own policy which allows me to drive another car (third party cover at that time only)?

Or does my father's car have to be insured as well?

Ian replies

Unfortunately, DOC (Driver Other Car) cover would only be in place for a vehicle that had its own insurance as well.
