Ask the insurance expert

How do I get cheaper car insurance premiums?

Tuesday, 04 Nov 2008 17:34
A reader from Greenock has just passed his test and now finds high car insurance premiums are keeping him off the road.

Ian Durrell, myfinances.co.uk insurance expert from the Only Group, which includes onlyinsurance.com, tackles the issue.

Ryan from Greenock asks:

Hi. I'm a 19-year-old male, and just passed my driving test.

Insurance for even the smallest of cars is ridiculously high.

How do people get around this? Many of my friends, of the same age have cars.

Ian replies:

A difficult one to overcome.

By being a named driver on your parents' policy some insurers may allow you to build up your own no claims bonus that would give you cheaper premiums later on.

Some insurers give a discount for a pass plus certificate.
