Burgled but who pays to replace the locks? Contents insurance or buildings insurance?

Wednesday, 24 Sep 2008 14:18
A reader from London has been burgled and now is having to change the locks. He is if he can claim on his landlady's buildings insurance policy.

Ian Durrell, myfinances.co.uk insurance expert from the Only Group, which includes onlyinsurance.com, tackles the issue.

John from London asks:
I have been recently been burgled and they took my house keys.

My landlady rang her insurance company and was advised that the locks came under the buildings insurance.

But on the Monday the insurance company changed their mind and said that it was under contents insurance (which I don't have).

They have now sent me a steep bill.

Can you advise me please.

Ian replies:

Keys will generally be covered under the Contents section.

I assume that it is not a case of the company changing their mind but a staff member making a mistake or assuming that the keys are under buildings.
